Emily in France ๐ซ๐ท Living a Nomadic Life
I live out of a suitcase.
Long-time readers of this newsletter (or anyone who has tried to make plans with me in the past year) are probably aware that I've been fairly nomadic for the past few months, following my whims (and assignments) around the world. It's a pleasant existence, most of the time, though it does get tiresome (especially when I begin accumulating what I think of as far too many things, i.e., more than fit in a carry-on sized suitcase).
But I was catching up with a friend I hadn't spoken to in a while the other day, and I think I boiled it down to brass tacks (excuse the mixed metaphor) fairly well:
I'm happy being nomadic right now. And I don't see myself making a permanent home anywhere other than Paris.
That said.
I love the fact that I'm free to spend weeks in far-flung areas of France and beyond. And that's perhaps because I love that New York is always here for me to recharge in.
I've spent the past month with my family, and by the time you hear from me next week, I'll be firmly ensconced in some sisterly bonding time in Los Angeles. It's exactly what this nomad needs... considering the fact that the strikes are in full swing back home.
Where I'm Eating
My brother, sister and I have a tradition of giving dinners as Christmas gifts. My brother outdid himself this year with the omakase at Sushi Jin, on the Upper East Side.
And as always, you can find my ever-evolving list of my favorite Parisian restaurantsย here.

Where I'm Going
To Los Angeles!
What I'm Writing
1. This collection of things a Parisian will never tell you for My French Country Home. (Paywall)
2. When I saw Leipzig was featured on the New York Times' list of 52 places to go in 2020, I started thinking about my time there. So, from the archives: this deep dive into the local beer, made with coriander and salt, for Eater.
3. From the archives: an exploration of Leipzig's famous lark pie โ now an almond-based confectionery โ for Paste Magazine.
What I'm Reading
It took me months to finish The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, but I'm glad I took the time. Read my full review on the blog.
