Emily in France 🇫🇷 Is Quarantined with Sourdough.
Self-isolation, day 7.
As of this evening, France's quarantine is even more intense, with exercise limited to just an hour a day (no more than one kilometer from home) and outdoor markets shuttering until further notice. Circus has become my saving grace, delivering freshly baked sourdough and cardamom braids to my door. Tomorrow, I am expecting coffee from Belleville Brûlerie. And friends, while I love coffee... I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that I have never been more excited about it in my life.
I am still reporting on the impact of COVID-19 in Paris (particularly on the restaurant world), and I'm still bringing you links to things that (I hope!) will make you smile. Today, I also hope they'll make you drool a little bit.
1. Watch this video, and then gear up to try all three different recipes for fettuccine alfredo. (Why not? You've got nothing else to do.)
2. Make the most of whatever you have in your kitchen by using up veggie scraps. (I wrote a guide on how to do it!)
3. Alternatively, there are some scraps you can even regrow into more food. Supermarkets be damned.
4. (In French) Parisian chefs were asked what's languishing in their cupboards. Here's what they had lying around.
5. Bean sales are up in the U.S. (and it's no surprise). Here's one journalist's suggestion on what to do with them.
6. Food isn't just comfort – it's a basic human need. And many people, including those usually supplying us with our food, are down on their luck due to COVID-19. This guide shows you how you can fight food insecurity and help support restaurant workers who may now be out of the job.
7. And if all you can do is raid your own liquor cabinet, no judgment here. But first, maybe check out my recent guide to myths about alcohol you should stop believing.
Stay safe, stay INSIDE, and à bientôt !
