Emily in France 🇫🇷 What Comes Next?
I'm gonna need more wine.
Today, the French Prime Minister outlined some of the regulations that will be upheld when lockdown is ended in France May 11. The major takeaway? No surprise: it won't (really) be over.
Yes, we'll be allowed to go out without a permission slip. Yes, we'll be allowed to travel. But the Prime Minister stressed that it's important for us to continue practicing social distancing measures to avoid a resurgence.
And I, for one, am going to follow his advice.
Strap in, folks – in the weeks to come, I'll still be here, reading, writing, and sharing fun things with you!
1. France has a whole category of produce dubbed les légumes oubliés (forgotten vegetables). I detailed how they became forgotten – and how they were rediscovered – for Atlas Obscura.
2. Every third Thursday of November, in France, is Beaujolais Nouveau – the day when the primeurs from this Burgundy-adjacent region are released. I detailed the current evolution of wine in the region for the Culture Trip.
3. In related news, the French government has finally defined the term "natural" officially, as it pertains to wine. One bit I found interesting? All natural wine will have to also be certified organic (i.e.... small producers who are vinifying naturally may opt out for cost concerns).
4. I have been cooking a bit during quarantine, but I haven't undertaken any big projects. While I do applaud those of you making your own sourdough at home, however, this journalist, has a wholly different feeling about it.
5. I've shared my new obsession with Bon Appétit's web show "Gourmet Makes" (and specifically with host Claire Saffitz). If you have yet to be converted, this video compilation of all the times she wants to give up will surely change your mind.
Stay safe, stay INSIDE, and à bientôt !
