Emily in France π«π· Says 'Bonjour!'

Hello isn't always hello.
Years ago, I wrote an article for the Wall Street Journal about why it's so important to say bonjour in France. And it's true: you really can't start a conversation, interaction, or even check out at the grocery store without first saying bonjour β and if you forget, people will absolutely remind you.
What I've since forgotten is how different interactions are in the States.
While there is no rule about saying hello when you walk into places in America, I have noticed that people tend to say hello at completely unprescribed times: waiting at the crosswalk, when you're getting out of your car, standing in line behind you at Target. And they don't just say hello. They start a conversation β or intrude on yours.
It's jarring.
Since being back in New York, I've had several people talk to me on the street: complimenting me on my t-shirt, asking for directions, or merely commenting on how much crap I'm carrying. The first few times, I was affronted and, I'll admit, a little bit afraid. 'Why would a stranger be talking to me?' I wondered in the split-second it took me to see a smile, to realize that no one meant me any harm.
Now, I kind of like it.
I may live in a country that purports to be defined by fraternity... but I've recently been reminded that New York is (unofficially) the place where you can always get a smile β and (unbeckoned) input on your new workout regimen, opinion on strappy shirts, or current read β from a stranger.

Where I'm Eating
It may not be super French... but I can't help but love the Szechuan cuisine at Deux Fois Plus de Piment.
As always, you can find my ever-evolving list of my favorite Parisian restaurantsΒ here.
