Emily in France 🇫🇷 On This Day In History...

24601.
One of my favorite lines in 1984 goes a little something like this:
"Perhaps one did not want to be loved so much as to be understood."
In what is otherwise a terribly bleak book, I found this quote heartwarming and essentially, viscerally true to my life experience. Of course, it's always nice to be both loved and understood, but to have the former without the latter feels false and flat.
This is my very roundabout way of saying: today, I received two separate emails from two separate people about the Les Misérables musical, which premiered on Broadway on this day in 1987 – the year I was born.
And friends, I have never felt more understood.
Where I'm Eating
Paris is not terribly well-known for its seafood, seeing as it's landlocked, but there are a few places I love, and le Chardenoux is a new (excellent) find in the 11th from celebrity chef Cyril Lignac boasting the perfect combination of fresh, modern cuisine and an old-school bistro feel. Find out more on the blog.
As always, you can find my ever-evolving list of my favorite Paris restaurants here.
Where I'm Going
1. The team from Septime launched the country inn D'Une Ile last year, and while I didn't have time to pay them a visit for their opening season, I'm definitely getting out there this year!
2. I don't know how I feel about the 90s already being a nostalgic draw, but I'm probably going to hit up Paris' Central Park bar for the last few days of its 90s/Marvel retrospective popup anyway.
3. It's not for another two months, but I'm already getting pumped about the Taste of Paris festival!
What I'm Writing
1. That Camembert up top comes from one of my favorite cheesemongers in the Upper Marais – find my other top spots for food in this trendy neighborhood on my blog, Tomato Kumato.
2. Speaking of cheese, did you know that there are folks making my favorite food in Paris? I talked about this new trend with Paris' first cheesemaker for Culture.
3. Last but not least, I visited one of Brie's few remaining Brie noir producers to talk about this funky Brie (spoiler: it's not a soft cheese!) for Mise.
What I'm Reading
1. The New York Times profiled several cowboy poets and it makes me want to book a flight to Nevada, stat.
2. When I'm not writing about food and Paris, I also write Young Adult novels, which means I've been following this story about the effects of cultural sensitivity on the industry very closely.
3. A mathematician proved that all hipsters look alike, and I can't stop laughing.
A bientôt !
